Here they are, in no particular order…the official video is here when I could find it.
Florence and the Machine - Drumming Song
This is my number 1 for the year, no question. Official video cannot be shared but click here to see it on YouTube.
Bill Callahan - All Thoughts Are Prey to Some Beast
Creepiest, darkest song realeased last year. Quite a voice this man has. Like it, I do.
Ian Brown - Stellify
So Ian Brown is still making music. He stills looks like a bum from the 80’s but can still write and sing a great song. I played this endlessly and I now have a new word in my vocabulary.
Shannon Stephens - In Summer in the Heat
“Daylight, don’t come and spoil this…”.
MSTRKRFT ftg John Legend - Heartbreaker
Played in clubs everywhere. ‘Cause it’s good.
Jack Penate - Today’s Tonight
Hard to define exactly what this is. It has some reggae elements which I usually dislike but it rolls, bops along nicely.
Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes
This may well have been a 2008 song for me but certainly was played thru my headphones a lot in early 2009 so what tha’ hell. I’ve got a feeling she may go in the Nelly Furtado direction though after a great first up CD. Hope not.
Passion Pit - The Reeling
Not really surprising I suppose. It was on everybody’s “best of” from last year. The Peter Gabriel-esque vocals dragged me in initially.
Imogen Heap - Canvas
One of the voices of the moment. former voice of Frou Frou. She’s dreamy. Perhaps sometimes a little too much so for some. The bridge (from 3:43) is possibly my musical moment of the year. Strings. “…’cause I just can’t find the strength…”.
Carl Sagan - A Glorious Dawn (ftg Stephen Hawking)
‘Cause I’m a geek and everyone else should be too. It stays true to Sagan’s ability to inspire and induce awe. It’s clever and makes use of auto-tune in a much better way the vocoder and Cher ever did.
